While on Vacation
I’ve got some big feelings about this one! “While on Vacation” is a resolute portrait that shows strength and determination. While recently working on a mural I had a passerby say “That’s a cool design, did you see it while on vacation?” which reads as a harmless inquiry but it implies a lot. It implies that since I don’t “look” indigenous I must be borrowing the symbolism from somewhere. It implies that the passerby would be fine with that and she expected an answer like “Yeah I did! I was hiking through an Aztec temple during my study abroad program and just thought it was cool”. It also implies that we don’t have local indigenous cultures, which we do but thanks to early colonizers our people were murdered or pushed west. Am I over reacting to her question, perhaps, but she’s not the only one to make comments like that. Everyone has to understand that indigenous cultures are alive and are worth their attention and support. Available $40 11”x14”.
